The Power of Love

I couldn’t stand it. It was nearly morning, the day after the war was over and Ken still wasn’t home. I wondered if he had been killed and I cried.

Saran walked in. “Princess Makoto? What’s wrong?” I looked at her. “Ken hasn’t come back yet.” She looked down. “Oh, I see. Princess…” “Don’t call me that. I hate it when you call me that.” “Sorry Makoto, I forgot. Ken is a strong person. If by anything, Makoto, I can assure you that he’d be determined enough to come home.” “Why?” “Because of you, Makoto,” Saran replied. “After all he is your knight in shining armor.” I laughed. “Thank you Saran.”

“I came in here because… well maybe this isn’t a good time to tell you this…” “Tell me, or I’ll execute you.” We both laughed. “Well the war was declared officially over, as you’ve heard. But secret attacks from Queen Nefaru have delayed the soldiers coming home.” “How many died?” “A couple hundred Makoto.” “Damn. Tell me, Saran, how many people have to suffer, and die until Queen Nefaru loses or wins? How many people? *SIGH* Even knowing that Jupiter has one of the most bravest, well trained, forces in the universe, I still wonder. Do you think Nefaru will win?” “I can’t say, Makoto…I really can’t…”

I looked up. After all we had been through no other answer could be provided but I don’t know. I knew that if I asked Saran if the warriors were well fed and well taken care of, she would lie and tell me that they had never been better.

I knew what I had to do. I had to find Ken. I couldn’t last another minute, let alone a few days without him. I knew how and when to sneak away. I knew where Ken and the camp would be. I decided that I should bring some food and supplies for the unfed, starved warriors. I knew that they were living worse than I would ever. Here I was having a feast every night and most of them didn’t even eat every three days.

I went to the kitchen and grabbed boxes of food. “Princess what are you doing?” a guard asked. “I am going to take a short ride.” “With all that food?” “I may be a Princess but that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t eat.” “Shouldn’t you be in bed? It’s dangerous outside… I think you should wait.” “Ryu this morning you told me to wait till it was dark, and now you tell me to wait till morning? What next wait till it’s dark. I am getting sick of this place. If you want you can come with me. It will only be a ride through the woods.” As soon as I invited him I regretted it. “Fine, I’ll prepare Velvet.”

I went outside to see Velvet. “Good horse. Look I hope you can run fast, because tonight I really need you to. We’re going to get away from the guards and see Kennie. So please don’t fail me.” I went inside and grabbed my cloak. I thought of a good way to lose the guards, without them even knowing till they thought I was home and asleep in my bed.

As we went out into the woods I started groaning. “I am tired,” I said, “Velvet and I will ride back to the castle. But don’t disturb me till the morning.” I then I ran as fast as I could on Velvet. They didn’t follow me.

When I got to a clearing I could see the royal palace from a distance. I knew the guards might be getting there soon and might check on me so I took Velvet to a place about 20 miles from where we were.

When we arrived I saw poor starving men. Ken spotted me and recognized Velvet. I had on my cloak so no one else would recognize me. “My lady,” the commander spoke, “This is no place for you to be. I think you should leave here immediately.” I looked at him. “Don’t tell me what to do, sir,” I replied.

In the distance Ken was talking to some people. “There is no way, that you, could be in love with the princess. Man you don’t even have a chance!” David told Ken. “Oh,” Ryan said, “I do though. I have even kissed the wonderful lips of hers.” “Fine, don’t believe me. I never said you had to in the first place.” Ken smiled. “Oh don’t worry, Ken we don’t believe you. Why would a sexy beautiful thing like the princess want to even think about you? You’re just another person who goes to the palace every week asking for her hand in marriage.” They all laughed except Ken. “I said you didn’t have to believe me,” Ken said sternly, “And if you think that I was so shallow like you, then you’re wrong.”
“Shallow like us? How are we shallow?” “Because,” Ken started, “ You don’t care what the Princess is on the inside, all you care about is the fact that she’s royalty and that she is beautiful.” “How would you know if she was beautiful Ken? You’ve never seen her up close. When you told the guards you were one of those guys that begged for marriage, you were rejected at the gate!” Ken just smiled.

There was much whispering when the guys came out to see who was here. Who the mystery woman that refused to leave was. “I brought food for all of you. I’ll make you a wonderful meal.” I smiled. They looked up. “No thanks, my lady, we can cook ourselves. I don’t think you should stay here.” “And I don’t think you have any manners,” I snapped. I got of Velvet to give them the food, but my hood fell off. Everyone started talking at once. “Princess,” The commander started, “You’re to valuable to lose, and we’re sending you home.” “Go ahead and try,” I said, “But you don’t have a chance.”

Ken ran over to me. “What are you doing here?” He whispered as he helped me off my horse. I looked at his friends. “I came here to see you,” I told him. “Makoto this place is to dangerous…” Then I’ll risk the danger. I’ll do anything for you, Kennie.” He helped me unload the food.

“Kennie,” I told in quietly, “ let’s take a walk. I haven’t seen you for a long time an I really miss you.” By this time his friends knew what Ken had said about me was true. “Ok but we can’t stay out to long. We have to set up a tent for you, if you’re staying that is.” “Of course I’m staying Kennie, and if I had the choice you know I’d be there at your side fighting with you.” He smiled, and leaned over and kissed me. “I’ll always love you, Makoto, no matter what happens.” “I’ll always love, you too. But Ken… I want you to come home... I worry about you all the time. I don’t like the fact that you’re out here and I’m stuck in the palace. I never get to see you.” “I can’t come home Makoto, you know that.” “Yeah,” I replied. He leaned over and kissed me again.

The next morning I woke up to the sound of a trumpet. I got dressed and went outside the tent. “Princess, you don’t have to get up.” A soldier said. “then how am I supposed to make breakfast for you?” I asked. He smiled. I was cooking for two hours. I was hot and sweaty and starting to feel sick.

Ken walked over to me and put his arms around me. “You are truly amazing,” he whispered, “First you sneak out to see me and then you feed everyone.” He kissed me, and his hair fell down in front of his face.

We heard a gunshot. “Battle stations!” some one yelled. Ken let go. “I have to go. Makoto run!” “Kennie… I want to stand by your side and fight.” He turned around and looked at me. “No, I care for you to much.” “If you cared for me so much then you would let me.” I said trying not to sound to whiny. “Makoto, listen to me. Go.” I knew there was no way around leaving so I shot him a sour look and left.

As I arrived back at the palace I prepared a good excuse. “Princess Makoto where were you?” “I got lost…” I started. The other guards went inside. Ryu looked at me. “You went to See Prince Ken. Makoto how could you? You promised.” “Now that’s a conversation I don’t remember.” I snapped. He looked at me. “I should scold you, but I know what it’s like to be in love.” I laughed. “Yeah I know, Ryu, that’s all you ever talk about.” “I wish I would have never have gone to war.” “Why? Ryu?” He looked at me. “She went out on the field beside me. She was shot but I was saved.” “Were you happy?” “Yeah, I was. You see even though she still went against my wishes, I knew she loved me because she didn’t leave my side.” I looked at him. I took Velvet from him. “Princess?” “I have to go it’s Ken.” I took off after him.”

“ken,” I said as I got off my horse, about a second after I got back to Ken’s camp. “I’m sorry I left.” “Makoto, what are you talking about?” “I mean that I should have stayed by your side, you know to prove I love you.” “Makoto, I never doubted your love. I almost died out there. If you had been there… I think I might have.” “You’d save me.” I said softly. “Yeah,” He smiled and ran his fingers through my hair, “I’d save you.” I smiled. “And if I was in the same situation, Kennie, I’d save you too.” “I know.”

Ken and I rode back to the palace. He hugged me. “We won the war.” Ken said. “And it’s over. Now I don’t have to worry about you anymore,” I added.

Ken kissed me. I laughed. The end of a perfect ‘Fairytale’.
